Artist And Caregiver – An Unlikely Balance
Sure glass work is my passion, but people are most important. Don’t get me wrong, I am enthralled with learning new skills in glass artistry. But to see the look of appreciation on a client’s face, to share the “ah ha” moment with a student, and to hear a compliment from an admiring critic, motivates me immensely. If our paths have crossed before, I want you to know that I value knowing you.
Besides being a glass artist, I am also a caregiver.I would not have chosen this role for myself, but for some unknown reason I have been chosen. Over two years ago my husband Bob was diagnosed with early Alzheimer’s.Even though he has this horrible disease in his family history, I was still shocked.I felt angry and depressed, in denial and easily emotional. Needless to say, it has been quite an adjustment for both of us.I never wanted to understand the mysteries of Alzheimer’s.
Why am I telling you this?My heart and understanding are being transformed.I’ve always been a free thinker, but now I have a new freedom to discover and create.Life is so very precious; my this belief be evident in my work.
As I was sharing some aggressive business plans with my dad, he said something like, “Carol, considering your situation, shouldn’t you be gearing down?” Honestly, it never crossed my mind. I know that Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease and with assistance my husband may be able to be independent for several years yet.I’m learning to speak a different language having a “front row seat” in the Alzheimer’s world. As I learn about communicating with my spouse in a new way that will be assuring to him during this uncertain and frightening time, I’m certain that I’ll still be able to be creative and productive in the glass studio.
I expect that there are probably many other small business owners and artists who are also caregivers. I share this very personal part of our lives with you for a reason. This path has been picked for me so that I can learn and share with others who need a listening ear. Creating custom stained glass pieces is my passion and I’d be so very pleased to have you visit Trickett Glass on line and let me know how I can assist.
