Causes of A Career Change In Mid Life, And The Options Offered For Starting Again
There was a time when people chose a given career path while still at school, undertook the necessary study for it, and after that remained in the same area of work until they retired. Conditions have changed since then, with more and more people changing their career path in later years. It goes without saying that the the later they leave this, the more difficult it may be to adjust to different ways of working, yet conversely, they probably have more money to assist in tiding them over the possible short-term pay cut that change of direction may bring about. The emergent area of Internet business has provided a new type of online jobs, that workers from many walks of life can train up in quickly, especially because they allow people to work from home.
There may be a variety of causes leading people to seek a different career path. Some people may have been coerced by their elders into choosing a given profession, for instance, someone might be expected to enter the family firm. However, in such cases this is rarely their real profession of choice, so later on, they may decide break away and re-train for the occupation they genuinely hope to work in. There are others who might accept a safe profession, and follow their genuine passion – in art or theatre, for instance – in their spare time. In the rare cases where they achieve success, they are free to cast aside their safe but uninspiring occupation.
A more common reason these days, is that people find out that in fact they do not like their selected career. The reality isn’t what they anticipated. For instance, I have come across a lot of ex-schoolteachers who made the decision to do other things due to the falling disciplinary standards in modern classrooms.
Money may also be a factor. There are certain occupations that are immensely fulfilling, for instance in scientific research, but salary rates are low and the positions are often short-term or temporary. For someone who is raising a family, the call of a better paid career in a more mundane line of work can be tempting. The way somebody has expressed it to myself, job satisfaction is all fine and dandy, but it’s little consolation if you are struggling to raise a family on less than the average wage and your kids are short of decent clothes and make do with second hand toys. On the other hand, some people give up high paid jobs so that they can choose a low paid yet more fulfilling job, or to allow them to work from home and cut out the stress of city life.
An ever more frequent and involuntary cause of a career change is redundancy. Those who are made redundant can take the opportunity to employ their redundancy payout to start up their own business. Sometimes it could be connected to what they had carried out previously, but often it can be something completely different. By way of example, someone I know, laid off from an administrative job, started his own antiques shop.
Thanks to the invention of the World Wide Web, there is a large number of Internet business opportunities that can be considered by those wanting a change in career or who have become unemployed. These may be described as ‘online jobs’ because they enable people to work from home and do business with clients by way of the Web. A few who have no knowledge of computing may be apprehensive that they do not have the IT know-how to take advantage of such opportunities, however training is available and a lot find the necessary skills are easily acquired. In cases where people are unfulfilled in their present line of work and want a new occupation, or find themselves in a declining industry and are hoping for new opportunities, the online jobs available in Internet business can give people a genuine opportunity to start over.
